I’m serious. Look around - a train derailment ripped from the pages of White Noise. Thinking, I need tampons and getting a Tampax ad,except...you didn’t say anything. Boeing definitely killing a guy. Genocide a la Liquidation of Warsaw. Most craven of all, a society that demands you keep showing up for work. Forget the fire and blood and carnage - there’s profit to be made.
It’s enough to make a comrade weep with despair. What if I told you it was all planned?
1. REVELATION OF OUR METHOD - INTRA-ELITE RIVALRY, OR IF CARL OGLESBY AND PETER DALE SCOTT DID THE FUSION DANCE
Capitalism needs conspiracies.
As Marx puts it,
The Prussian Government...smells the breath of Revolution in midst of the apparent apathy. It despairs at the want of a tangible form of that specter, and feels alleviated, as it were, from the nightmare every time the police affords bodily shapes to its ubiquitous but invisible antagonist. It attacks, it will go on attacking, and it will successfully convert the passive resistance of the people into an active one.1
Marx had it right, as he usually did: the Prussian monarchy was full of it. They were scared of their own shadows - in fact, they were sowing the seeds of their downfall. Unfortunately state repression moves in lockstep with capital’s perpetual motion machine. Barely 20 years after Marx croaked, Lenin was so struck by the coercive power of bankers he felt compelled to introduce a brand-new category:
FINANCE CAPITAL.2 The blasphemous union of industry and stockpiled money, the relation between the two inverting - finance on top, Modern Mechanical Industry on the bottom - then congealing into a symbiotic relation spawning endless consolidation and monopoly3. That’s how you wind up with Standard Oil. Thyssen-Krupp. IG Farben.
Finance capital’s most flagrant incarnations toppled governments it beefed with4 and propped up those it liked.5 Think of it: an eye-watering agglomeration of capital ready and willing to change history willy-nilly.
That was 108 years ago. It’s gotten worse since.
Capital doesn’t drive innovation. It requires it, for a very simple reason - rate of profit falls over time.
No shit, right? It only sounds stupid. Pursuit of M’ is the locomotive driving this train - when it stops the wheels come off. Past a certain stage of development (just ballparking here, anything past monopoly) that edge gets harder and harder to find. You gotta get creative. Hence Air America6. Le Cercle pulling the strings for Reagan so he could unleash stock buybacks7. CIA fronting intel to Enron8. A neverending Matryoshka doll of elite conspiracy. And Janus-faced, at that: OK, sure, they did Reagan. But how does that square with Clinton?9
Enter Carl Oglesby.
Oglesby (quite possibly SDS’s biggest crank, which is saying something) is most famous for his 1977 book, The Yankee and Cowboy War.10 It was a doozy.
Instead of just regurgitating his work from the Assassination Information Bureau11 proving the Warren Commission was bullshit, Oglesby posited a class-conscious theory of why They killed Kennedy and kneecapped Nixon:
They fucked with the money.
The ruling class isn’t one faction, you see. It’s two. Yankees and Cowboys, and they’re fighting. That’s why weird shit happened for two and a half decades straight.
It sounds insane - didn’t Lenin just say capital creates monopoly? Monopoly over markets, yes; the bourgeoisie still owes class loyalty to its material base. Like how Obama guys work for Uber, or Mike Rowe tongue-fucks AEI’s taint (finance and industrial capital showing their loyalty, respectively). Oglesby offers a simple deduction: once you understand the Yankees and Cowboys were at war, and why, you’ll understand why JFK and Watergate shook out like they did.
Let’s flesh them out.
YANKEES…
Rockefellers.12 Cabots. Dulleses.13 WASPs who made good way back when off domestic oil reserves. Timber. Molasses. Heavily concentrated in the Northeast (shocker). Ran essentially the entire public and deep state when JFK came on the scene.
COWBOYS…
The Yankees’ annoying younger brother. ‘New money’ totally dependent on a permanent war economy,14 littering the Sunbelt and California. LBJ, for example. The Crown family, owners of General Dynamics. Howard Hughes. Ever eager for new contracts, markets, and labs to build and test their newest killer gizmos.
& THEIR TIFF OVER THE REMOTE CONTROL OF EMPIRE
Before, during, and after JFK the Yankees and Cowboys waged war through their respective policy mouthpieces,15 mostly about which wars to start. The Yankees were OK with pulling out of Vietnam; they weren’t going to lose their shirts. Au contraire, said the Cowboys. Without Vietnam we’re fucked.16 Both factions were too busy with their turf war to do much else - until that handsome devil of a president tried to get cute. Or that flop-sweat hatchetman with mommy issues threatened to blow the whistle. Then they united just fine, to kill and ruin them.
JFK GETS WISE
Some time between banging Judith Exner over breakfast and Marilyn Monroe after dinner, Jack Kennedy grew a conscience. He started tacking to the left on everything under the sun: sealing the breach with Nasser,17 trying to stop Isra*l’s nuclear program in its tracks,18 started making overtures to Castro,19 began pulling out of Vietnam,20 even tried charting a less colonial course with Indonesia.21
Any one of those would overturn America’s 20-year-old secret government,22 nevermind all five. Worse, each one jeopardized the Scrooge McDuck hoard they were amassing from the rape of the third world.
Kennedy was threatening to violate the postwar sine qua non: profit uber alles. He had to go.
For once everyone, Yankees and Cowboys alike, agreed. Hence the assassination’s motley cabal - the CIA, LBJ, organized crime, right-wing Cubans, French fascists and a Zionist kill team,23 with the Yankees handling the governmental wizardry and the Cowboys controlling the crime scene (the city of Dallas).
They did it in a public place, on purpose. A mass ritual with earhorn subtext: we did this to the President. Imagine what we’ll do to you.
Each faction was roped in by its respective class interests, and their skulduggery bore class fruit: the Yankees’ Mobil reaped oil superprofits that would make Croesus blush.24 LBJ’s corruption trial was literally stopped by news of Kennedy’s assassination.25 The TFX went into production May 1964. General Dynamics was saved.
Oglesby could stop there, with a trenchant class analysis of JFK’s assassins. Instead he applies the same heuristic - bickering ruling-class factions uniting to hate-fuck troublemaking figureheads - to the ouster of Tricky Dick, the insecure Cowboy who could never stop looking over his shoulder.
YANKEES AND COWBOYS GET ON A DUSTY TRAIL TO WATERGATE
If you’re unfamiliar with Watergate’s official narrative, it goes something like this:
Nixon’s unprecedented arrogation of presidential power to both himself, and Satan’s valet Henry Kissinger - along with the dirty tricks of the White House Plumbers - prompted civil servants to Do Something. A testament to the nobility of the Fourth Estate. There was much rejoicing.
Don’t believe it. It’s the ice-cream man telling you what’s for dinner. The civil servants were Bob Woodward, “former” Navy intel26 who got most of his scoops from CIA leaks.27 Mark Felt. Other names you’re tired of hearing. Presidential power wasn’t the bone of contention; turf was. See, Nixon lived in constant fear he’d suffer JFK’s fate. In a delicious twist of irony he ended up making Kennedy’s error, but in reverse: he didn’t want to destroy the secret government. Just centralize the surveillance/drug smuggling28/bio-warfare apparatus, the very prerogative they killed JFK to protect, unto himself.
Final straw was Nixon instructing Haldeman to threaten Dick Helms with opening up “the whole Bay of Pigs thing.”29 (He meant “expose CIA’s role in the JFK assassination.”) Nixon, the veteran poker player, just showed his hand. So they destroyed him.30
That’s Oglesby’s thesis, in a nutshell: a ruling class wracked by internecine warfare over markets, only coming up for air to crush mutual threats. It’s elegant, ballsy - and explains most synchronicities between JFK and Watergate.
THE POINT
Intra-elite conflict and its schizophrenic consequences for US imperium is fundamental to our method. The wild swings in deep politics are ongoing - e.g. Genocide Joe’s reanimated corpse walking a tightrope between neocons (Ukraine) and DARPA/what remains of the Yankees (the China trade war).
It’s not enough, though. Oglesby’s focus is deep but narrow - we need to metabolize the world conspiracy system to get the lay of the land. That brings us to our second dance partner: Peter Dale Scott,31 who peeked behind the curtain but refused to pull it down.
Anybody who studies conspiracy will tell you, Peter Dale Scott brung us to the dance.32 Technically a Berkeley poetry professor, his output is 90% conspiracy books - or as Scott calls them, books on deep politics. See, Scott isn’t doing your dad’s conspiracy. He’s elevating it to an academic discipline. He frequently knocks it out of the park, too - Scott’s predictions about certain JFK rogues were vindicated by releases from the Assassination Records Review Board years later, itself created in the fallout of Oliver Stone’s JFK.33 His work is relentlessly erudite and riddled with sophistry (JFK was a state assassination, yes - but not a coup). It’s brilliant. Scott lacks Oglesby’s sauce, though: doesn’t theorize potential perps, doesn’t even posit a theory of why JFK and Nixon met similar fates beyond a limpid, “they both threatened to wind down the Cold War.”34 For our sins, we’ve read all of Scott’s longform work.35 The picture’s consistent: a hyper-literate but essentially liberal subject who knew exactly how far to push while keeping his job. 36
The tendentiousness shows. At the end of every doorstopper, there’s a “Well, now what?” coda. These exhortations - after AfPak! Iran-contra! The Global War on Terror! - inevitably boil down to a heartfelt, “What if we all got along?” Insult to injury, Scott, the prophet of the deep state, is longtime BFFs with Dan Ellsberg and takes his actions37 at face value. Maddening. Despite his willful naivete, Scott’s deep-political model is invaluable: a top-down secret government foisted on an unwitting populace in the batshit twilight of World War 2, leapfrogging past every piddling civil rights win. Frequently flinging a stick of dynamite at the public state as it roared by.38 Once they killed JFK it was all over - GG, boys. America was fun while it lasted.
Credit where it’s due, Scott’s a genius. But he never goes for the jugular: avoids naming names. Underemphasizes the pre-WW2 class composition of the public state, which could never have produced anything except a deep state.
The hell with that. We’re playing for keeps here.
THE METHOD SUMMED UP: DALE SCOTT IN LIGHT OF OGLESBY
That’s how we’ll investigate, more or less. Taking the subterranean geography so painstakingly mapped out and reading back into it the great Marxist wherefore: which segment of the ruling class gained M’ from conspiring? We believe ninety percent of the time this leads to the correct conclusions - who. When. Where. What. Why.
If we were plug-and-playing Oglesby’s model it would be easy. Unfortunately the deep state threw a big ol’ wrench named NEOLIBERALISM in the gears. It changed everything.
2. WHAT CHANGED SINCE 1977?
They won.
Sounds stupid again. But it’s true: capital kicked socialist ass up and down every continent. Whoever won the Yankee and Cowboy War, we lost - no more USSR. Cratering life expectancy. Zionism triumphant. That M’, though...never been better.
Conspiracy was the bourgeois weapon of choice. It worked so well it begat a brand new capital formation: the international bourgeoisie, or in conspiracy terms, the supranational deep state. No more Yankees, no more Cowboys - they’re citizens of the world now, or at least way less tethered to a geographic base. Particularly after the orgy of pillage following the Soviet Union’s destruction39 that wanderlust was replicated across the globe - finance capital loosed from its fetters. That’s how Bandar Bush wound up owning half of Dallas, Unocal (tried to) build a pipeline across Central Asia - bizarro shit unthinkable fifty years ago. The international bourgoisie’s conspiracies are just as transnational and weird. There’s no choicer example to illustrate that than the mack daddy of all conspiracies:
9/11.
2A. JUST KIDDING
We won’t try to do 9/11 justice here. It’s too big. Allow us one assertion
9/11 - which includes WTC93, Oklahoma City, Bojinka, and 9/11/2001 itself - transpired how and why it did because of the internationalization of the bourgeoisie.40 Without that material basis, “9/11” as we know it couldn’t have happened.
The internationalization of the ruling class put national, comprador, regional bourgeoisie in a blender and supercharged the size and weirdness of the conspirac(ies). And we’re gonna prove it to you.
3. SKETCHING THE GAUNTLET
Wrapping our heads around that structure requires a human conspiracy encyclopedia. That we’re not. Instead we’re hammering critical nodal junctures: articulation points of the state’s mailed fist. Some standouts:

It sounds scattershot. The effect’s unitary, though: a multi-front combined arms assault on humanity.
That word - humanity - is annoyingly universal. We’d like to dwell on it a moment.
Marx repeatedly invokes the human organism and its metabolic processes. He often contrasts it against the demon machines of industry. Marx understood that we’re all one - individual cells, one body. Rising or falling with its brothers and sisters.
You didn’t have to be a world-historic genius to get it, either. Others made the same conclusion after long years of struggle. Eugene Debs:
I said then, and I say now, that while there is a lower class, I am in it, and while there is a criminal element, I am of it, and while there is a soul in prison, I am not free.
Right now the human organism’s gushing blood from a dozen arterial wounds - sorry. The assault worked. We’re in full-blown retreat. They’ll pry the M’ from our cold dead body. They’re already building a causeway with rubble and Palestinian corpses for Zion Oil & Gas.41
That’s us First World shitheads too, or it will be soon. Captive colonial peoples are always test populations for the repressive apparatus42 - the drones buzzing above NYC barbecues? Tested in Gaza.43 US cops train extensively with IOF,44 and for the same reason: the natives are restive. They must be pacified.
We won’t navel-gaze on morality or “politics” as such too often - it’s undialectical. Besides, if you’re here, odds are we share similar politics anyway. But to head confusion off at the pass, our position is simple:
God damn the Empire. Free Palestine.

Deep Politics and the Death of JFK is the most useful dialectically.
